Spotlight Session: How Will Georgia Count Votes in 2026?   We are hosting an optional spotlight session on Monday at 4 PM ET to address confounding developments in Georgia concerning the uncertainty around how votes will be tabulated. This will be an informational session focused on a critical and unresolved issue:   ➡️ What is Georgia's looming vote-counting problem?   Georgia, with high-profile statewide races—including a closely watched U.S. Senate contest—currently faces significant uncertainty regarding its voting system framework. A law enacted two years ago specifically prohibits the continued use of QR codes as the method of official vote tabulation The statutory deadline for compliance is July 1, 2026 Funding for the new voting system the law requires has not been provided, nor is the required new system on the market. The General Assembly adjourned without resolving how votes will be counted in November.   This issue has drawn national attention and remains unresolved.   Election security advocates, including Coalition for Good Governance, have proposed utilizing Georgia’s existing backup paper ballot system using hand-marked ballots counted by scanners, which is already authorized in law. However, there is currently no consensus or clear path forward.   This session will explore: The risks associated with unresolved system decisions Why simply postponing the July 1 deadline does not resolve underlying issues What stakeholders and advocates need to understand moving forward

Join us for an urgent discussion on the upcoming midterm elections and the current state of America’s political parties, featuring Elaine Kamarck, a renowned political analyst who serves as a senior fellow in Governance Studies and the director of the Center for Effective Public Management at Brookings. Kamarck gave a riveting overview of threats to democracy in the U.S. during WNDC's Tea Party in January. Whether you're closely following politics or simply looking to better understand the forces at play, this event will provide valuable perspective and thoughtful discussion. We will explore the strengths and challenges facing both Democrats and Republicans, offering insight into the evolving political landscape and what it could mean for our future. Drawing on her deep expertise in American politics, Kamarck will examine key trends shaping the midterms, including party strategy, voter sentiment, and potential outcomes.   EVENT DETAILS: Remarks and Q&A, in-person and via Zoom. 11:30 a.m. cash bar opens, 12:15 p.m. lunch (optional), 1–2 p.m. program. $10 lecture or Zoom only, $30 members and $40 guests for lunch (plus tax).   Kamarck is an expert on electoral politics, government innovation, and public sector reform in the U.S., the 100-nation Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and developing countries. She has participated in multiple presidential campaigns, served as a member of the Democratic National Committee and its Rules Committee since 1997, and helped found the New Democrat movement that supported Bill Clinton’s election. She also served in the White House leading the National Performance Review, known as the “reinventing government initiative.” Kamarck is the author of several influential books, including "Primary Politics," "Why Presidents Fail and How They Can Succeed Again," and "Lies That Kill: A Citizen’s Guide to Disinformation." She taught public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School and is a frequent media commentator on political and governance issues. Kamarck holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, Berkeley.

Greg Nammacher will show how volunteers everywhere can replicate that impact. Marlene Silva will explain how remote volunteers working with the Mecklenburg Dems helped recruit 1,900 active in-district volunteers in North Carolina. Find out how Heather Haggarty and her daughter, who launched Donuts + Democracy in 2024 to increase young voter turnout, registered, educated, and mobilized more than 114,000 students at 450+ events on nearly 150 college campuses.
